Demystifying Spirituality: What It Really Means

Someone asked me recently what spirituality means. It is becoming the new buzzword, but many people who claim to be spiritual are not really Zen at all. It is time to demystify what it actually means. The goal is to put this into simple layman terms without any fluff or woo-woo around it.

You Are Not Your Labels

The first step is to know your spirit. You have to peel back the layers put on you by parenting, schooling, societal norms, and cultures. You are not what you do. You are not who you were born to. You are not your education, fame, friends, home, car, or shoes. When you break free from the material world and who you think you are supposed to be, you are left with your spirit.

What Spirituality is NOT

Many people confuse the process with the destination.

  • It is not just listening to audiobooks, meditating occasionally, doing yoga, or going to retreats.

  • These activities are scenic routes, but they are not the goal.

  • It is not a temporary feeling where you feel good during Zen activities but stay stressed and agitated the rest of the time.

  • It is not living on a roller coaster of high and low emotions, because that depletes your energy.

The Hidden Lesson Behind Difficult People

This path requires serious introspection and letting yourself be challenged without getting defensive. If you constantly attract toxic people, your soul might be trying to force you to learn how to communicate effectively. If you want to learn compassion for everyone, the universe will continue to give you tough people to handle. By understanding this, you can devise a way to respond with love and compassion instead of fighting.

Finding Your True "I Am"

Doing this inner work helps you understand who you are deep down at the soul level. I used to carry labels like being a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, and a people pleaser. I used to avoid conflict. But the more I looked at those patterns, I realized I am actually a seeker and an educator. My favorite things are to seek wisdom and share it with people so they can be liberated.
